Russian supertournament in progress

The fourth Novgorod international chess supertournament is now underway in Russia. The double round-robin tournament, featuring six of the world's top players, started on June 11 and will continue until Tuesday.

In a departure from the norm, the organisers are experimenting with a new scoring system which rewards three points for a win and one for a draw. However, this scoring system is only a supporting system which does not supersede the already established existing scoring system.

After the first two rounds, there were three joint leaders - Gary Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Evgeny Bareev. There were three white wins in the first round, but the second round was much quieter. Nigel Short was the only winner with a comfortable game against Boris Gelfand.

In the third round Gelfand got his first points by beating Veselin Topalov. Bareev and Kasparov had a fascinating dual with the latter pressing and eventually winning after almost seven hours of play. Kasparov took the lead in the fourth round after beating Short while his closest rival, Kramnik, only managed a draw with Gelfand. Readers with Internet access can visit the Novgorod web site for more fascinating aspects of the tournament, including the games and photographs of the players.

CHESS LEAGUE, ROUND 2

In the second round of the seventh Bayview Chess League last Sunday, Penang Free School "A" maintained their slim lead in the Premier Division when they scored a 2.5-1.5 victory over Universiti Sains Malaysia "A".

Two other games also ended with the same scoreline: Chung Ling High School "B" against the Old Frees Association, and Pessca against Penang Free School "B". The Chung Ling Old Boys Association won 3-1 against the MSSPP Juniors.

The Division One results saw Methodist Boys School taking a clear lead after having beaten Penang Free School "D" by 3.5-0.5. Penang Development Corporation beat Universiti Sains Malaysia "B" by 3-1, while Hewlett-Packard and Penang Free School "C" battled to a 2-2 draw.

The other two matches in this division - Chung Ling High School "C" against International College, and Chung Ling High School "D" against Union High School - all ended with similar 2.5-1.5 results.
